COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM
As Governor DeSantis confirmed that Florida is slated to shut down the scandal-plagued Alligator Alcatraz detention center by the beginning of next month, I am calling for comprehensive immigration reform that demands accountability for documented abuse and a complete overhaul of America’s immigration detention system.
1 Immediate federal investigation into Alligator Alcatraz and all private detention facilities operating under federal contracts
2 Ban on private prisons and detention centers. Incarceration should not be a profit center.
3 Provide immediate relief for immigrants in legal limbo & extend Temporary Protected Status – Cuban Adjustment Act cases that have been stalled for years need to be processed to give relief to Cuban families in limbo. We need to extend Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans and Haitians facing dangerous conditions in their home countries, and create clear pathways to permanent status for long-term TPS holders as part of comprehensive immigration reform.
4 Create pathways to citizenship for long-term residents and Dreamers
5 End family separation policies and prioritize keeping families together during immigration proceedings
6 Reform the asylum process to ensure fair hearings while maintaining humane detention standards
7 Increase funding for immigration courts to reduce case backlogs that keep people in detention longer
8 Strengthen oversight of all federal immigration detention facilities with independent monitoring
9 Designate courthouses as safe zones from ICE officers – we want more people showing up for their legal proceedings, not fewer.
